Merge when you need one file made from several; split when you need part of a single file. That one line settles most cases. The rest is detail.
Merge when…
- A form asks for one PDF but you have separate scans — ID, marksheet, photo.
- You want to send a single attachment instead of five.
- You are combining chapters, invoices or receipts into one document.
Split when…
- You only need a few pages out of a long PDF.
- A file is too big to upload and you can send it in parts.
- You want to remove pages you should not share, like a cover letter or bank page.
The quick test
Ask one question: do I have too many files, or too many pages? Too many files means merge. Too many pages means split. If both, split first, then merge the parts you keep.
Do it without uploading
PDFs often hold private data — contracts, IDs, statements. Both jobs can run entirely in your browser, so the file never touches a server. That is the safe default for anything sensitive.
