Passport photo size depends on the country. India, the UK and the Schengen countries use 35×45 mm; the United States uses a square 2×2 inches. Using the wrong size is the most common reason a photo is rejected.

Rules that apply almost everywhere

  • Plain, light, even background with no shadow.
  • Face centred, looking straight at the camera, neutral expression.
  • Head filling about 70–80% of the photo height.
  • No hats or head coverings, except for religious reasons, and the full face must still be visible.
  • Recent photo, taken within the last six months.

Why the exact size matters

Passport offices and visa portals check dimensions automatically. A photo that is a few millimetres off, or the wrong aspect ratio, is bounced before a human ever sees it. Setting the country size before you print or upload saves a second trip.
